Automattic announced the immediate availability of its latest release WordPress 3.9.

Codenamed “Smith” in honor of jazz organist Jimmy Smith, it features the following updates:

  • A smoother media editing experience with an improved visual editor (it’s speedier and has mobile support). You can even paste from Word without having to clean up messy styling.
  • Easier image editing with quicker access to crop and rotation tools while editing posts. You can also scale images directly in the editor to find just the right fit.
  • Drag and drop images. Grab them from your desktop right into the editor.
  • Gallery previews displays grids of images right in your editor.
  • Audio and video playlists to showcase your music and clips easily.
  • Live widget and header previews allow you to add, edit, and rearrange your site’s widgets right in the theme customizer. You can preview your changes live and only save them when you’re ready. The improved header image tool also lets you upload, crop, and manage headers while customizing your theme.
  • New theme browser allows you to easily find that great free theme from WordPress.org. Have fun!

Although it’s now available for download or as a prompt in your dashboard, ContentRobot doesn’t recommend updating to this release just yet. We always recommend that you wait a few weeks to ensure that all the bugs have been worked out before unleashing it on your production WordPress-powered website.
