Problogger has written a great post on why blog projects might lose steam after running for a while. Don’t let this happen to you!
You bit off more than they can chew
Did you start multiple blogs that the same time and find you can’t maintain them? Or did you pick a topic that is just too wide and, therefore, overwhelming?
Tip: Focus on what you enjoy most and put your heart and writing into it – it may mean dropping a blog or two, but remember that better written blogs get better results.
You ran out of things to say
Did you pick a topic that is too narrow and now you can’t find much to write about?
Tip: Find a new twist on what you’ve been talking about and see if that can revitalize your creativity and perhaps expand into new territory.
You hit ‘bloggers block’ or you are bored
Are you in a phase where where your creativity and new ideas are just dried up?
Tip: Take a break (even if it’s a short walk), read something new, or don’t post for a bit til you get refreshed in your own way.
You got too busy
Do you have so much going on in your life that maintaining an blog just isn’t fitting into it?
Tip: Step back to see if a maintaining blog is right for you at the moment – if so, keep going! If not, rethink your blog.
You went on holiday
Did you go on vacation or take a break only to find that you lost your writing rhythm?
Tip: While time away should help you to relax, you now find you are dreading getting back on the keyboard. It’s a great time to see if you are committed to blogging.
You had a personal crisis
Did you experience a death in the family, lose your job, have a relationship break up, or any other significant events that caused you to put your blog on pause?
Tip: Robert Scoble recently has posted events about his mom’s illness, showing so it’s OK to add personal elements to your blog. Better blogs do provide quite a personal slant – just don’t dwell on primarily and try stay within topic.
You had a blogging crisis
Did you get overwhelmed by the negativity of the blogosphere because you’ve been critiqued or even attacked for their blogging that forced you to step back?
Tip: Instead of taking it personally, realize that there are rules (written and unwritten) of the blogosphere – just don’t repeat mistakes that led to the flames.
