You already know that little planning goes a long way. Before making the leap into blogging, ponder these:

1. Indentify Your Strengths
What do you do best, bring that to the blog. Whether you are the manager, or the creative, or the techy, each can bring something great to the table. Whatever the talent, make your site visually stunning, easy to use, and engaging.

2. Determine What You Want to Accomplish
What is your goal? Communicating with your customers? Selling more product? Be clear on what motivates you and your company and the reasons for entering the blogsphere.

3. Learn by Reading Other Blogs
Then search the web for company blogs that are similar to yours by using Technorati’s Blog Finder, IceRocket and Google Blog Search for starters.

RSS allows you to pull content from most blogs and receive instant notification whenever the blog is updated. Once you have found a blog that you like, look for RSS feed subscription buttons and use them to pull a feed into any news reader you like (My Yahoo! and Bloglines are two of the most popular options).

Then study these blogs. What do they do? Are they successful? What can you do better?

4. Determine Your Technology Requirements
Find a good blogging platform and determine where your blog will be hosted. Movable Type, WordPress and Drupal are popular blogging software solutions, but do they meet your needs? And remember, while there are free solutions, are they appropriate for your company?

5. Get Help Where You Need It
Get some any strategy, technical, design and editorial help. While you may know a lot about your business, you might need some good ideas when it comes to these blog basics. (See #1 about those strengths again).
